The Game Is Mental

You’ve heard this before. But, really think about it.

We all (a high number of us, at least) have the physical abilities to do the things we talk and dream and scheme about. So what’s that gap between the talk and the actualization? It’s our minds, nothing more and nothing less.

I’m watching a  basketball game right now; there’s a player named JR Smith playing who has all the talent you could fit into a basketball player. Thing is, JR has bounced around with several teams in his career and never been the “Franchise Guy” for his team — always a complimentary piece who eventually wears out his welcome. Always. There is nothing, though, that JR cannot do on a basketball court. His legacy will be a player who could do it all, and just never quite got it.

Another player I think of when I see JR is Dwyane Wade. Even if you’re not into hoops you’ve heard of DWade. Wade has three championship rings. Is rated one of the top 5 players at his position in the history of the game. Has been the Franchise Guy in Miami his entire career (and still is, despite LeBron James’s presence: The Heat would/will never let DWade leave town). Dwyane Wade is a surefire Hall of Fame player.

Why do I bring up both guys? This is why: There is nothing that DWade can do, physically, that JR cannot do. I’ll even go as far as to say that JR has more physical abilities than DWade — he’s slightly taller, a better shooter, with more range, and has proven to be more durable over his career. These are all true. So why is DWade an all-time great and JR is… JR?

It’s what is between each man’s ears. Focus, discipline, and commitment are what separate a DWade from a JR Smith, in anything in life. Take all of that away, JR very well could rate as the better player. But those brains of our make a helluva difference.

What this means for you: physical ability — talent, size, genes — do not make or break you. Your physical location does not determine your future. Your focus, your discipline, and your commitment to doing the necessary things when they need to be done — not skipping steps when you really want to — are what determine you ultimate fate.

Be DWade, not JR.

'Star Wars: Episode VII' cast revealed Earlier Today, Disney finally announced the cast for Star Wars Episode VII. The cast included the actors from the originally trilogy, but also a whole new group of young actors ready to make their Star Wars debut. If you don’t know who they are, consider this articles an introduction. Star Wars - Episode IV - Trailer (original 1977) If you viewed this Movie Screen "INTRO" when you were a child, most likely you are a Star Wars Geek, like me. The one film I can recall as a child and actually be on edge waiting up to a decade for the next theatre episode, is "STAR WARS"! The Time has been awaited once again and the Cast Has been revealed earlier today! Episode VII Lead Roles John Boyega Long rumored to be on the shortlist of actors still being considered for a lead role in Episode VII, John Boyega is a British-Nigerian actor who is best known for his his role in Attack the Block as Moses, the leader of a street gang who must defend their inner city neighborhood in South London from an alien invasion. More recently, he has appeared in My Murder and Imperial Dreams. Boyega is a relative unknown who is just waiting for the right film to turn him into a star (seriously, go watch Attack the Block. It’s fantastic, and he’s fantastic in it). If he’s the lead protagonist, which seems likely, then Star Wars could do just that for him. Adam Driver Adam Driver is an ex-marine and the new villain in the Star Wars universe. Driver is best known for role as Adam on the Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls, though he also appeared in Inside Llewyn Davis and has experience on Broadway. Daisy Ridley Daisy Ridley is a newcomer. Her best known work is a short film called Blue Season. Besides that, her credited work comprises of several guest appearances on episodes of British television shows. It’s possible she’s playing the daughter of Han and Leia, which would certainly help make a name for her. Oscar Isaacs Oscar Isaac was recently in the spotlight for his lead role in the Oscar-nominated Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis. Past film credits include The Life Before Her Eyes, Body of Lies, and Agora. He’s a rising star and his role in Inside Llewyn Davis makes him one the most recognizable actors in the film, besides the original cast members. Andy Serkis You probably know who Andy Serkis is. The British actor and director played (with the help of motion capture technology) Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, King Kong in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Captain Haddock in The Adventures of Tintin. Given his track record, it seems likely that Serkis will be providing motion capture for a digitally created alien character. Domhall Gleeson Domhall Gleeson is and Irish actor who is likely best known in sci-fi and fantasy circles as Bill Weasley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, but has also played roles in About Time and True Grit. He’s also an accomplished writer and theater actor, having been nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the 2006 Broadway production of The Lieutenant of Irishmore. Max von Sydow Max von Sydow has been acting for over 60 years. Fans of the cult classic 1980 Flash Gordon film will remember him as Ming the Merciless, but over his career he has had roles in many films, including Through a Glass Darkly, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Emigrants, The Exorcist and Three Days of the Condor, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Robin Hood and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. He’ll be a veteran actor on the set, though what role he plays is still unkown. 1. Overalls Whether you like them short or long, there's no denying it — overalls are in, and we're not sorry about it. Way back when, this utilitarian onesie was perfect for stashing rocks, crackers . . . basically whatever was on hand at a given moment. Today, we're filling the pockets with our modern must haves – our phone, car keys, and lipstick. And maybe some snacks still, because some things never change.
2. Tevas OK, so before you negate this trend, hear us out. Growing up, these sporty sandals were the preferred kicks for the nature-loving, outdoorsy kid. These days, the look has been co-opted by the style set with designers like Marc Jacobs sending pairs down the runway. 5. Shrunken Sweaters Back in the day, these cozy mini knits were our go-to style (thank you, Clueless). There wasn't a color, pattern or texture we didn't like, and we were under the impression that these shrunken pieces were worth wearing every day of the week. Worn now, it's a sexy way to show a little skin in a cropped style that still leaves something to the imagination.
6. High-Waisted Jeans Today's high-waisted styles have some fit improvements over their predecessors from the '90s. 7. Matching Set Probably one of our favorite looks to make a comeback, this sleek style is a major upgrade from the matching sets of yesteryear. 10. Sporty Accessories Look down at your wrist right now: are you wearing a chunky plastic bracelet to count steps and such? You aren't alone. The sporty style is all over the place and reminds us eerily of the G-Shock watches we used to obsessed over. Today we've traded keeping track of the minutes left in recess for keeping track of our sleep cycle.
